AidtipsHearing aids are life-changing, but they can’t help you if they don’t have the battery life they need to work efficiently. Hearing aid wearers know that when they hear that little beeping noise, they need to have a spare pack of batteries handy.

Typically, hearing aid batteries last between 3 to 7 days, depending on factors like the type and size of the device you have. Even the environment you live in can affect how efficiently your hearing aid batteries work.

The audiologists at Audio Help – located throughout Manhattan – know how important your hearing devices are to your overall wellness, so we’ve compiled these 5 tips to extend the battery life of your hearing aids.

  1. Follow the “5-minute rule” after you remove the plastic tab.
When you take the plastic tab off, the zinc in the battery mixes with the air to provide power. Studies show that waiting five minutes before inserting the batteries into your hearing aid can extend the battery’s life by up to 3 days.
  2. Keep your hearing aids cool and dry.
Extreme temperatures and high humidity reduce the lifespan of your hearing aid batteries. Never store your hearing device batteries in the refrigerator or bathroom. Instead, store them at room temperature and keep the battery door open at night to dry out any excess moisture.
  3. Turn off your hearing aids when not in use.
One of the easiest ways to prolong the life of your hearing aid batteries is to turn your hearing devices off when not in use. Open the battery door and leave your hearing aids in a safe, dry place.
  4. Use a dehumidifier.
Dehumidifiers and dry storage kits protect both your hearing aid batteries and the devices themselves. They also provide a safe place to store your hearing aids when you take them out.
  5. Use your oldest package of hearing aid batteries first.
While hearing aid batteries can be safely stored for some time, it’s a good idea to use your oldest package first. The longer the batteries sit in storage, the shorter their life will be.
