Probably the most familiar of the tests performed in our NY practice, pure-tone testing allows your audiologist to quantify and understand your hearing sensitivity. Once you are seated in a comfortable sound-treated room, your audiologist will provide you with instructions and place a soft earphone in each ear. He or she will then sit at their computer on the outside of the room, able to see you through a window. Your audiologist will communicate directly with you through your earphones. Inside the room there is a microphone, so you may speak directly with your clinician.
Once the pure-tone testing process begins, you will hear a series of words and pure-tone sounds that your audiologist will present via their computer. Over the course of approximately 15 minutes, your audiologist will record and plot the results of your responses. This information provides the datapoints that will allow your audiologist to view a picture of your hearing profile. The resulting audiogram (or graph) of your hearing plays a vital role in the diagnostic and rehabilitative process.
