The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test is a sophisticated measure of how sounds conduct through a portion of your auditory nervous system. The ABR is a safe and painless test that uses small electrodes to measure the neural response to sound. Patients are often referred for ABR testing if they have greater hearing loss in one ear, experience dizziness, or note fullness in the ear.
When you arrive at one of our New York offices for your ABR test, your audiologist will seat you in a comfortable chair and clean specific areas on your forehead and ears. The areas cleaned will be the locations where small electrodes will be placed. You will also have soft earphones placed in each ear. Once you are prepared and the equipment is ready, you audiologist will ask you to close your eyes and relax. You will hear a series of clicking sounds, but there is no need for you to respond. The computer system will record the neural responses as they happen.
The total test time is approximately ½ hour.
