Audiologist Dr. John P. Weigand

Dr. John P. Weigand, a native of Queens, is a graduate of Archbishop Molloy High School and Queens College. Dr. Weigand attended and excelled at the St John’s University’s Master of Arts Program and then earned a Doctorate in Clinical Audiology from the University of Florida. Dr. Weigand completed practicum training at the Manhattan Eye, Nose and Throat Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Prior to earning his NYS Audiology and Hearing Instrument Dispensing Licenses, Dr. John P. Weigand completed his Clinical Fellowship at the Long Island College Hospital where he received extensive training in Pediatric Audiology, including fitting hearing impaired children with amplification and collaborating with surgeons in the operating room during cochlear implant procedures. He is also a past chair for the Bridging the Gaps in Communicative Disorders Conference, whose faculty included renowned speakers from around the nation and was attended by over 150 professionals.

In 2000, Dr. Weigand joined Downstate’s Department of Otolaryngology and holds the ranking of Assistant Professor. His current clinical practice includes complete audiological evaluations of newborns, children and adults, vestibular and neurological testing, cochlear implant evaluation and follow up, and amplification evaluation and fitting utilizing the most technologically advanced high definition digital hearing instruments available today. Aside from clinical practice, Dr. Weigand is also an active lecturer and clinical instructor for resident physicians who regularly rotate through the department. Dr. Weigand was also instrumental in the development of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program under which all babies born at Downstate undergo objective hearing screening prior to discharge. Dr. Weigand then evaluates all at-risk children who require additional follow up.

Dr. Weigand regularly attends continuing education activities to maintain the highest level of expertise in his field and has presented research at conferences, which was later published in the Hearing Review Journal. His ACE Award for continuing education was granted by the American Speech Language & Hearing Association in 2004 & 2007. This is a testament to Dr. Weigand’s commitment to excellence.

Dr. Weigand is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology holding Board Certification and has earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language & Hearing Association.

Dr. Weigand has experience reaching the media, as he has been a guest on several Health Center programs, which are hosted by Dr. Gerald Deas, and Dr. Weigand’s clinic was the focus of a recent news article. He is also a regular participant in health fairs and active in community outreach recently spearheading Downstate’s Better Hearing Month Hearing Screening program.
